Premier League Relegation Battle 2025-26: Who's Going Down?
The Premier League relegation battle is often more dramatic than the title race. This season is no exception โ six teams are fighting to avoid the three relegation spots, and every game feels like a cup final. Here's the state of play.
The current bottom six
20th โ Southampton (15 points): It's been a miserable season for Southampton. They've won just 3 games, scored the fewest goals in the league, and their defense has been porous. They sacked their manager in January, but the new manager bounce lasted exactly two games. They're 8 points from safety with 10 games left. It would take a miracle.
19th โ Leicester City (20 points): Leicester's return to the Premier League has been a struggle. They lack quality in key positions, and their January signings haven't made an immediate impact. They're 3 points from safety, which is doable, but their remaining fixtures are tough โ they still have to play Arsenal, City, and Liverpool.
18th โ Ipswich Town (22 points): Ipswich have been competitive in most games but can't seem to win. They've drawn 11 games โ more than any other team โ which shows they're not bad enough to go down easily but not good enough to pull away from danger. Their home form will decide their fate.
17th โ Wolves (24 points): Wolves are just above the relegation zone on goal difference. They've been inconsistent all season โ capable of beating anyone on their day but equally capable of losing to anyone. Matheus Cunha has been their best player, and if he stays fit, they should survive.
16th โ Everton (25 points): Everton's season has been overshadowed by off-field drama โ the takeover saga, points deductions, and fan protests. On the pitch, they've been resilient but lack quality. Sean Dyche's defensive approach has kept them in games, but they need to start winning.
15th โ Crystal Palace (27 points): Palace should be safe, but they're not mathematically clear yet. They've been better since January, and their remaining fixtures are favorable. They should finish around 14th.
Key fixtures
The six-pointer between Leicester and Ipswich on April 5 could decide both teams' fates. The loser will be in serious trouble. Wolves vs. Everton on April 19 is another massive game โ the loser could be dragged into the bottom three.
The final day of the season (May 24) could be incredible if multiple teams are still in danger. Last season, the relegation battle went to the final day, and it was the most dramatic afternoon of the season.
My prediction
Relegated: Southampton (already gone), Leicester City (not enough quality), Ipswich Town (too many draws, not enough wins)
Surviving: Wolves (Cunha keeps them up), Everton (Dyche finds a way), Crystal Palace (comfortable in the end)
The magic number for survival is usually around 36-38 points. Wolves and Everton both need about 12-13 more points from their remaining 10 games. That's 4 wins and a draw โ achievable but not easy.
